Wilder Memorial Nursery School · Founded in 1924 · Hingham, MA

Wilder Memorial Nursery School is a COOPERATIVE school. The staff and parents work together to ensure a quality program for the children. The cooperative is organized as a nonprofit corporation. The corporate membership is comprised of the parents of the children enrolled in the school. The Corporation is run by a parent Board of Directors. There are at least 20 Board members.

There is little doubt that the more involved parents are at a school the better the school. At Wilder the staff has a WELCOME mat out for the parents of our students, and endeavors to form a working partnership with the parents. We recognize that if parents and teachers work together, the child will benefit.
We encourage parents to get involved at Wilder, in little ways and in big ways. There are many interesting ways to add to a child's experience, for example:

The doll's clothes need frequent washing; library books need to be selected and collected from the town Library; volunteers are needed to help with fundraisers; donated "fabulous junk" needs to be gathered, as it is always useful for projects; remnants of materials, buttons, and trim are also acceptable supplies to donate to our arts and crafts center.
We encourage parents to explain their profession to the class. Through the years, a nurse, an artist, a forklift operator, an airline pilot, a chef, a librarian, a policeman, a physical therapist, a fireman, a (non-professional) singer, a plumber, a dental hygienist, a carpenter, a phlebotomist, doctors, musicians, teachers, nurses, have all come to their child's class to "show and tell" their profession or pastime. Children are a great audience and delight in asking questions. They enjoy the OBSERVATION and the CONVERSATION! It is a great learning opportunity to acquaint them with different vocations and professions.
Do you have a hobby or a skill you can demonstrate to your child's class? One of our all-time favorites was the dad whose talent was to balance a CHAIR on his NOSE! Who knew??

A teacher can create a "project" from a parent's hobby. A parent who sews, possess a collection, paints, enjoys arts and crafts, and takes pleasure in gardening, golf, or tennis. A person who loves to cook can participate in a cooking project and have the children cook their own snack. The children can be lead in jazzercise, pilates, or aerobics. Parents can come to read a story or a book that the children would enjoy. Everyone has something to offer. Children are interested in ALL things and remember: no work is ordinary to a child.
